An East 10th Street property once the site of a neighborhood of duplexes known as College View will soon host a new apartment complex.
The future Eastern on 10th began construction in the last months and is expected to be complete and ready for residents by August 2018. The Preiss Company, which is developing the site, said that it plans to start leasing this fall. Preiss currently operates The Boundary downtown.
According to Chelsey Harper, regional manager for Preiss, the complex was first envisioned in 2016 when Preiss decided to partner with the owners College View Apartments.
The old apartments will be replaced by three mid rise apartment buildings. Harper said that the company determined the density for the site was underutilized and many of the existing buildings were in need of repair. In light of this, developers decided demolition and new construction was more appropriate.
A petition from the College View of Greenville LLC to close College View Drive and adjacent parking lot was first brought to the Planning and Zoning Commission during its Sept. 20 meeting.
Jim Walker, who was representing the company at the meeting, said the destruction of the apartments was necessary because most of them were built in the 1950s, contained mold, lead paints and asbestos.
Harper said the complex will offer one-three bedroom floor plans for any resident, not exclusively students, who meet the rental qualifications, similar to the Boundary. Harper said the decision to build was made based on market and university need for student housing.
The complex will offer residents a “bohemian” feel according to Harper, and will include “garden style apartments” with patios and balconies.
Additionally, the complex will include a resort-style pool, resident clubhouse, fitness center, yoga and dance studio, as well as private study rooms for students and a roaming courtesy patrol.
The leasing office for the complex will located at 201 E. Fifth Street and will open in August.
